Toyota Corolla, by Japanese carmaker Toyota Motors, has been one of the longest surviving nameplates across the globe. First introduced in the year 1966, the ubiquitous sedan has been ruling the roost in some of the most thriving auto markets in the world. In 1997, Corolla went on to become the bestselling car in the world outdoing the Volkswagen Beetle. It's been nearly 50 years of existence and the iconic saloon has undergone several design revisions during its long eleven generation tenure. The latest generation model in Philippines, Corolla Altis, is far-superior in every aspect against predecessors, be it its captivating exterior design, amazing interior layout, truly nimble driving dynamics or even choice of engine displacements. The hot selling sedan in the country has been changed from modest to macho by Toyota Motors in a very imaginative way. The outside design has never been so appealing; with aggressive and aerodynamic front, and sides of a sheer premium saloon it gets a desirable buff of everything. The Toyota Corolla Altis is available with two powerful gasoline engine options of 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre that extract out a fitting 122 PS and 145 PS of maximum power respectively. The fuel economy has been very decent sighting the competition in the segment. The interiors of Corolla Altis are well appointed of both the variants, and a sense of luxury is always felt to the occupants. The intelligently designed dashboard, center console and instrument clearly suggest the fact that huge amount of time has been spent in order to get the perfect pie. There is long list of comfort convenience and entertainment features in order to keep the passengers engaged while on long routes or on traffic ridden streets. Safety gears are sufficient in the sedan to protect the passengers under any mishap occasion. The handling is great on plain roads and on bumpy roads with its sturdy suspension and lesser body roll. The price tag may seem slightly higher, especially of the bigger displacement; however, the kind of 'juicy' package here on offer, one may not hesitate to pay that extra bit.
The least powerful of the two, the 1.6L gasoline engine offers a fuel economy of about 10-11 kmpl in city, while can be raised to 12-13 kmpl when driving on highways. The more powerful 2.0-litre power mill delivers anything between 8 kmpl to 9 kmpl in city cordon and anything above 10-11 kmpl when driven on long routes.
The 1.6-litre, 1598 cc gasoline engine gives out a maximum power of 122 PS at 6000 revs per minute. On the other hand the action packed 2.0-litre, 1987 cc engine fumes out a high power of 145 PS at 6200 revs per minute.
Both the peppy engines on the offer possess decent ability when it comes to pick up and accelerations. The 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre mill just waits for the driver's command to sprint quickly on the roads. Pushing the acceleration pedal takes the car from 0-100kmph in no time. And not to forget the more refined CVT or manual 6-speed gearbox that skillfully collaborates with the engine to do this task.
The exterior design of Toyota Corolla Altis is very impressive, very sporty looking, very eye-catching and at the same time holds great detailing. The premium factor oozes right from outside with its overall aerodynamic approach that lets you fall in love at the very first glimpse. The now more confident sedan has smiling chrome radiator grille with sweptback LED headlamps with DRLs in 2.0-litre trim and the sporty front bumper with lustrous fog lamp casing that adds more charisma to the front of the saloon. Whereas, there is air vent just beneath the front bestowing it a racy stance. The sides look flawless with side indicators mounted on ORVMs and slightly beefed up wheel gaps to continue that sporty theme. Moreover, the rear has large tail lamps, aero spoiler at boot lid alongside a broad chrome slat amid tail lamps on the boot lid chanting premiumness, while the wide bumper with reflectors and chrome tipped single exhaust complete the rear profile. The new Corolla has 17-inch/16-inch alloys for the 2.0-litre and 1.6-litre correspondingly. Though there is a feeling of some design inspirations lifted from Honda City, but still this cannot snatch away the credit from Toyota design engineers of their very comprehensive dynamic design idea.
The overall size of Toyota Corolla Altis is definitely large with respect to its wheelbase. The length, width and height are 4620 mm, 1776 mm and 1460 mm in that order. Moreover the wheel base measures a good 2700 mm.
The gorgeous exteriors are a result of some sincere sweat. The interiors too imbibe the same effort that provides Toyota Corolla Altis with an unwavering yet premium design. The room in inside the cabin is pretty adequate for all the passengers, with a slew of driver-oriented features. The dashboard layout is neat and sleek, but not bulky looking. The boot space measures a good 470 liters that is quite enough to hold considerable stuff. Additionally, if the boot space seems less, the rear seat has the feature of 60:40 split that can come handy.
The 1.6L, 1598cc Dual VVT-i, 4-cylinder inline DOHC 16V petrol/gasoline engine is packed with electric fuel injection supply system. This engine generates a maximum power of 122 PS at 6000 rpm alongside peak torque of 54 Nm at 5200 rpm. The engine comes with a choice of either CVT or 6-speed manual transmission gearbox. The larger displacement gasoline engine is the 2.0L, 1987cc Dual VVT-i, 4-cylinder inline DOHC 16V with ACIS and electric fuel injection supply system. The wheels used in the two available variants share slight difference. Here the lower displacement trim i.e. 1.6L receives 16-inch 205/55 R16 alloys, whereas the 2.0L trim has 17-inch 215/45 R17 alloy wheels.
On the braking and handling part, the Toyota Corolla Altis is an improved machine. All thanks to the MacPherson Strut type front suspension with L-shaped lower arm with stabilizer, whilst the rear is torsion beam type with stabilizer. The brakes at the front are ventilated discs and rear is solid discs or leading-trailing drum brakes.
The Japanese carmaker has always equipped its car with class leading safety features and Corolla Altis is no different. The safety components are SRS airbags for the driver and passenger at front. Others include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) Brake Assist (BA), 3-points ELR seat belt for all with pretensions and force limiter, child protection lock, LED laden high mounted stop lamp vehicle, Toyota Vehicle Security System (TVSS) with immobilizer, wireless door lock with smart entry etc.

Buying the Altis was a tough decision. I was not someone who was used to sit in the backseat while being chauffeured around. But after an accident, I was advised to quit driving. Hence the search for the perfect chauffeur car started. The Corolla Altis 1.6G was the obvious choice, as it offered luxury backseat comforts, and Toyota’s reliable Quality. Moreover, if one day I would want to put the pedal to the metal, the Corolla won't disappoint either.
