Ssangyong Rodius Review

Introduction

SsangYong Motor Company is the fourth largest South Korean automaker that recently made its comeback in the Philippines market. The company displayed three of its creation at the recently concluded 2016 Manila International Auto Show. Of the three cars on display at the show, one was its best-selling MPV, Rodius. This rugged looking MPV was first released in the year 2004 and in the year 2013, SsangYong greeted the world with Rodius second-generation model. And it is the same model that will go down in sale in the Philippines, under the direction of SsangYong Berjaya Motor Philippines.

Engine, Variant, and Mileage

SsangYong Rodius is offered in three trims in the Philippines market, each differing from the other in seating configuration. All Rodius variants ELX (7-seater), Rodius EX (9-seater) and Rodius SX (11-seater), are powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder engine, producing a maximum power output of 115 hp @ 4000 rpm along with a peak torque of 360 Nm @ 2800 rpm. The ELX and EX variants feature a 5-speed automatic gearbox, whereas the best-in-class SX trim comes paired to a six-speed manual transmission.

Exterior

SsangYong Rodius though is classified as a multi-purpose vehicle but on the looks front, it feels inspired from its other SUV siblings. On to the front, it is crafted with a bold bonnet with multiple pleats, SsangYong signature triple-line radiator grille blending perfectly with sharp headlamps, and circular fog lamps with chrome lining overhead. Rodius side profile gets prominent wheel arches, body colored door handles and door hanging ORVM, giving the driver better road visibility. At the rear end, one will find chic-looking auxiliary tail light, rear spoiler, and rear auxiliary brake light. SsangYong dimension sheet reads as 5130 mm X 1915 mm X 1815 mm (L X W X H), with its ground clearance and wheelbase measuring 185 mm and 3000 mm respectively.

Interior

Being a dedicated multi-purpose vehicle, Rodius interior is designed to give the best comfort and convenience suiting each and every driving condition. Drivers arena is smartly designed, making the reach of all functionality handy. In the list are present, multi-functional steering wheel, ergonomically designed instrument panel, and heated steering wheel. On the entertainment front, the car is bestowed with 7-inch touchscreen audio system with DVD/MP3 Player. On the connectivity front, you'll get features like AUX, Bluetooth, and Mirrorlink. Other amenities present in Rodius include power steering, power window, keyless entry, rear parking sensor, and automatic air-con system.

Safety

Now let's talk about safety, the most important aspect of a car. SsangYong has stuffed Rodius with all the basic safety features that are important and must to have in a car. To the list are included features like driver's airbag, front passenger's airbag, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Door Locks, Security Alarm, and Security Control. Though the car misses some important features like the Tire Pressure Monitoring and Hill Start Assist that could slightly hamper one's buying decision.

Verdict

SsangYong Rodius is an efficient and powerful multi-purpose vehicle that in the Philippines market will compete with the likes of Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Innova. One of its biggest advantages is its pocket-friendly price tag, however, it lacks on the safety front.
