Review of Mini Clubman

The British automaker -  Mini needs no introduction. Its premium cars have always gone beyond the standards and given drivers something extra to cherish on. The Mini Clubman, a premium Estate by Mini marquee under BMW was launched in 2007. The elite car has received rave response by car aficionados around the globe. At the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the brand launched the latest version of Clubman – 2016 Mini Clubman, which recently made its entry into the Filipino market. Flaunting a tasteful blend of luxe factor, supreme comfort, majestic looks and practicality, the new Clubman is a huge crowd pleaser. Built on a new platform, the 2016 Clubman has all the tempting bits to make it a tremendous success, that its predecessor lacked.

Engine, mileage & variants

The premium hatchback by Mini has undergone a 360-degree twist to offer a new level of performance as compared to its predecessor. In the Philippines, Mini has introduced the new Clubman in two variants namely – Cooper and Cooper S. Both the trims are powered by Mini Twin Power Turbo technology. The entry level sports a 1.5-litre inline three-cylinder engine, that produced a significant 136 hp power at 4,400 rpm, along with the peak torque of 220 Nm. While the top end trip features a 2.0-litre inline four cylinder engine, that churns out a higher 192 hp power at 5000 rpm and a maximum torque of 280 Nm. The Mini Clubman comes with two transmission options, a 6 and an 8-speed automatic gearbox. In terms of performance, the Cooper S takes the lead, with a top speed of 228 Km/h and a 0 to 100 Km/h time of 7.1 seconds. While the Cooper is more efficient, with 5.4 l/100Km.

On the first look, the 2016 Clubman, looks unmistakably a Mini. The latest offspring has retained the signature brand's frontage with similar chrome-surrounded circular headlights, protruding hexagonal radiator grille mounted on a large bumper. To add on to its sporty feel, Mini designers have added an extended roofline, along with Clubman Split Doors, that bestow it an athletic stance. At the rear, the car flaunts few tweaks like floating roof, extended horizontal taillights, split doors with dual-section chrome handle, dual exhaust pipes, and roof spoilers also distinguish its looks from the outgoing model. For the 2016 Clubman, Mini is playing on the idea of bigger the better. By increasing the size as compared to the previous model, the 2016 Clubman now stands at 4253 mm x 1800 mm 1440 mm (L x W x H) along with a wheelbase of 2670 mm. This newly added size has made the cabin spacious, bestowing supreme comfort and a bold presence.

The philosophy of Mini's exquisite design is clearly echoed through intense dynamism which is paired with refined details. Step inside and let your eyes sway over Clubman's high-end interiors that instantly instill a sense of sophistication in you. The new Clubman flaunts a premium upholstery, ambient lighting and an advanced center console which creates a whole new experience of Mini lovers. The most amazing addition in the new Clubman is the added space, that fits 5 passengers comfortably, with sufficient head and leg room, without compromising on the boot space. The boot space has also been enlarged and has a volume of  360 litres which can be further increased to the maximum 1250 litres.

Safety, Braking and Miscellaneous

Mini has always been vigilant about incorporating proficient safety features within its cars. Like any other car from Mini's portfolio, the Clubman also flaunts high-end safety suite dynamic stability control with hill start, traction control, brake assist, impact beams and crash sensors. Similar to its predecessor, the 2016 Clubman also sports four disc brakes coupled with Anti-lock braking system and Electronic Brake-force Distribution, that deliver optimum braking irrespective of the situation. The car also features 6 airbags, that scales down the collision impact.

The excellent refinement, seamless powertrain and comfortable seating of the car make it a proficient hatchback in its segment. But, the company has failed to provide a coherent as well as harmonious driving experience.
