MG GT Review
Est. in 1921 by two automobile enthusiasts William Morris and Cecil Kimber, MG was initially a sports car manufacturer. And since then it has come a long way and achieved great heights in this highly competitive industry. Today MG is placed among top 500 global companies in the world for its cutting-edge technology and superior manufacturing methods.
Latest edition added to MG's long-lived glory is a coupe-styled sedan, known as the GT. This latest addition is bestowed with some great body-style, sculpted with great character lines and unique features. It is available in two engine options, NSE 1.5 DVVT and SGE 1.4 TGI, and four transmission options that go as 5MT, 4AT, 6MT, and 7AT. Its power sheet displays the following figures, 170 hp and 135 Nm for the 1.5L power mill and 208 hp and 235 Nm is generated by the 1.4L engine.
The interior front is also packed with great styling and technical features. Leather and rich fabric work can be seen in the interior spaces; also present is a 7-inch touchscreen display system that is integrated with an INKALINK media system. Along with this, it also contains features like FM/AM radio, AUX-in, 12V charging unit which increase its utility quotient.
Safety is taken care by features like ABS, Vehicle Stability Control, Motor control side retainer, side and curtain airbag, hill-start assist and the list goes on.
Mileage and Fuel economy
Fuel economy of an automobile is its efficiency to run in relation to the amount of fuel consumed by it, and thus forms an important matter to be looked into before buying a car. MG GT is offered in two distinct engine options, NSE 1.5 DVVT, and SGE 1.4 TGI. The 1.5-litre engine comes with a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic transmission displays a combined fuel consumption of 5.9L per 100 km and 6.2L per 100 km respectively. While all the three 1.4-litre engine options deliver fuel consumption of 5.9L per 100 km. All the trim levels though have a different diet for fuel but are fitted with the same 55-litre capacity of fuel tank.
This coupe-styled sedan is available in two engine options, first is an NSE 1.5 DVVT power mill and the second is an SGE 1.4 TGI option. Former one delivers a maximum power output of 107 hp @ 6000 rpm and maximum torque of 135 Nm @ 4,500 rpm. While, the latter one generates 208 hp @ 5,600 rpm and 235 Nm @ 1600-4400 rpm.
Acceleration & Pickup
The variants fitted with a five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmission gearbox, zoom in from a standstill position towards the 100km mark in 12.8 seconds and 13.9 seconds respectively. Each of them further displays a top speed of 180 km/h and 170 km/h. If the above-mentioned figures fail to impress you, we would suggest you to opt for any of three trim levels with a 1.4L TGI engine option. They can roar to a top speed of 200 km/h and can hit the 100 kmph mark from naught in just 5.9 seconds.
MG GT is a fusion of coupe-like looks and sedan-like comfort. One thing whose prominent presence is felt on the entire car is the bold character lines. Starting from the front fascia, the car features a thin but aggressive looking grille that towards its end smoothly blends into the curvaceous headlights. It also showcases a honeycomb shaped air vent that is guarded by distinctly shaped fog lamps, but its bumper housing steals the show; the nicely crafted with V-shaped contour lines gives the car a bold look. Moving to its side, where body lines continues to give the car a more defined look. In addition, it also features body-coloured door handles; indicators integrated ORVM and well-designed wheel arches. The rear end showcases a noticeable taillight that extends long enough to let its both ends meet. Adding to its beauty is a rear diffuser, twin exhaust pipes, and extended bumper.
The automaker has designed the car with a decent length of 4,612 mm along with the height of 1,488 mm. The overall width of the car reads 1,804 mm and its wheelbase measures 2,650 mm, allowing you to have ample relaxing space inside the car.
This car carries some great interior design language. Starting from its dashboard that houses chrome trim air-con vents and information system that is again guarded by vertical air-cons. The center console is packed with features and carries a distinct shape. Moving down towards the center tunnel that houses the gear shaft, hand break and some cup holders where you can keep your hot cappuccino. The steering wheel is nicely wrapped and is embossed with utility buttons making the ride convenient for the driver. Inner beauty is further enhanced by the dual-color backlight dashboard, and fabric and leather toned seat covers that are excursively available in the top variants. Electronic air-conditioning and pollen filter comes staple with all trim levels, but the rear A.C. vent and climate control system fails to make its appearance in the lower levels.
There is no dearth of interior comfort, the car is packed with some great features that will make your ride fun and joyous. To its long list of comfort features are included start-stop system, brake energy regeneration system, 'follow me home' headlamp, aero wipers, front and rear electric windows, and remote central locking. Storage is no problem as the car features front cup holders and ash tray, also all the trim levels are accompanied with front armrest that comes with a storage compartment. A 4-way manually adjustable driver and passenger seat are included in the 1.5L automatic and manual transmission. While, the 1.4L three trim levels comes with 6-way manual adjustable driver's seat and lumbar support. The top-in-class 1.4 TGI Deluxe 7AT comes with an array of comfort features that will make you feel special. This special kit holds features like paddle shift, cruise control, automatic dusk sensing headlight, lazy locking and rear parking camera.
The car is blessed with ample amount of leg room and head room for its passengers. The boot also displays some sizable area making it easy to store luggage and other stuff. It provides a boot space of 485-litre, allowing to go on long trips with as much carry-on you want.
Engine and Performance
As stated above MG GT is offered in two engine options, an NSE 1.5 DVVT, and an SGE 1.4 TGI. Further, both these engines are accompanied with various transmissions like a five-speed manual, four-speed automatic, six-speed automatic and a top-of-the-line seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Both the power mills are capable of generating great power figures that reads 107 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 208 hp @ 5,600 rpm respectively. Like its power figures, torque figures also vary from one another and that too with a great difference. The 1.5-litre engine generates 135 Nm @ 4,500 rpm and the 1.4-litre engine produces 235 Nm @ 1600-4,400 rpm.
Stereo and Accessories
In order to give a best-in-class entertainment, the MG GT is blessed with a 7-inch touchscreen display that will be available in the top variant, following it will be an INKALINK media system with mirror link. This technology will allow you to connect your device with the car so that you can operate it at ease. A Bluetooth hands free is no more a luxury, as it has become a necessity and is rightly integrated into the best-in-class trim level. If you are planning to buy a lower level variant don't be disappointed as the cars are equipped with digital FM/AM radio and USB/AUX-in ports. Further, a 12V charging port is also provided in some of the trim levels, allowing you to charge your smartphones and other devices on the way. You will surely groove to the beats when the music will come out of its speakers that are limited to four in all the trim levels except in the top variant that features 6 speakers.
Wheels are one of the important components of the car and are responsible for providing a better on-road grip, higher performance, and efficiency. Inside MG GT'S well-crafted wheel arches are housed alloy wheels that are wrapped around with 205/55 R16 tires.
Braking and Handling
Efficient braking system along with a well-equipped suspension system is a must for any vehicle. They provide you a better grip over the car, further raising drivers confidence level. Both the front and rear side are fitted with disc brake ensuring a hassle free ride. Moreover, the car comes with a front MacPherson strut suspension along with a rear H-shaped torsion beam suspension.
