Available in both coupe and convertible body styles, the BMW 2-Series is one of the big names in the premium luxury car segment. It is also offered in an MPV style, Grand Tourer model but today we will take a look at what the latest 2017 2-Series has to offer. The new model not only improves on the existing technologies that are present on the vehicle, but also brings a major change in its drivetrain. Bearing a label as premium as BMW, you certainly won’t be seeing this vehicle a lot in the Philippine streets. Nevertheless, it will certainly be an exemplary piece of technology that will be worth of whatever price the manufacturer will ask for it. Let us take a look at what’s new and exciting with the 2017 BMW 2-Series.
The most exciting part about the new 2-Series is the presence of two new Turbocharged engines. If you ask our personal opinion, the vehicle is already a beast when it comes to churning out horsepower but the addition of a turbocharger certainly changes a lot of things. Succeeding the currently sold 220i and M235i, the 2-series will be offered in two trims namely the 230i and the M240i. The 230i model will be supplied with a 2.0-litre twinpower turbo engine that churns out 248 hp with a torque of 350 Nm. The highest trim for the Philippines will be the 2-Series M240i that is underpinned by a 3.0-litre turbo engine that is capable of producing 335 hp with a torque of 500 Nm that allows the vehicle to make from 0-100 kmph in merely 4.2 seconds. If this isn’t overkill by the manufacturer, then we’re not sure what is. These powerful engines will be offered with a standard 8-speed steptronic sports transmission that makes controlling the raw power a breeze. With such frightening speed and power offered with these engines, there’s no way you can expect a good mileage from these vehicles as a great drive is all you can ask for.
Although the engines are totally new on the 2017 2-Series, the same cannot be said about the vehicle’s exteriors. As the new model will neither be a facelift or a new generation, there aren’t any changes to the car’s overall design. In the front we find the same kidney shaped BMW grille that sits between two really sleek yet menacing headlamps and have been outlined with chrome. The lower intake adds tons of sportiness with its honeycomb mesh grilles that are also present with chrome inserts at both sides. Like already mentioned, do not expect any sort of exterior changes on this car but the M-Sport package on the 240i certainly adds a bit of freshness to the model through new aerodynamic body kit and grey-colored mirror caps. The package also lowers the vehicle’s height by 10 mm, while adding more stability and comfort.
Just like the exteriors, the interiors also see no change than the previous models. But for those who’re unaware of the older models, these will still work like charm. The dashboard looks totally impressive with a gadget loaded center console and highly stylistic steering wheel that has inbuilt controls. The AC vents have also been placed neatly and ensure that the cabin stays cool from all corners. Also seen in the higher models, the wide LCD display sits atop the dashboard and can show various information and media. The instrument cluster is also quite large making it easier to view the information without staring too hard. The cockpit is also oriented towards the driver and will certainly make them feel like cruising inside a high performance sports car.
Although the vehicle doesn’t save you a lot of fuel money, it will certainly save your life in case of any accident or collision. Its highly rigid structure along with some neat engineering from the staff at BMW ensures that the occupants stay clear out of harm's way at any cost. Other than that, the new 2-series has been equipped with advanced safety and driver assisting features such as high beam assistant, iDrive driving assistant, speed limit info, rear-view camera, parking assist and ABS with EBD. The M-sport package also adds a ton of professional grade safety equipment such as a new braking system, Servotronic sports steering and a brand new suspension.
Vehicle’s such as the BMW 2-Series certainly don’t need any seal of approval as it is an instant classic. Despite of no changes in the exteriors or interiors, there might be some who might find the vehicle a little drab. But when you put the new turbocharged engines in the equation you’d surely throw your money away for a brand new 2-series coupe.
